Frequently asked questions

Is it political?

No. The Y does not promote any party, candidate or agenda. Students debate ideas, not people.

Is it religious?

No. The Y welcomes everyone.

How do we start?

Submit the free Intent Form for your state, then book an interest meeting. In Rhode Island, contact us.

Do we need a big group?

No. One teacher can lead 2 to 10 or more students.

What does year one require?

Only your state's main event.

Can students use AI?

AI is a tool for research. It can't write your bill or speech, and students must understand and defend their positions.

Can a student join without a school group?

Every delegation needs an adult advisor, and a group can be as small as a few students. See how to start one at your school.

Can parents attend?

Registered parents may chaperone. The State Capitol is public, but please don't come to the hotel unless registered.

When are award nominations due?

9pm on the second day of each conference.

Does it count toward civic seals?

It may. Schools decide what counts, and we provide participation letters. See Civic seals.
